Overview

Most broken pastes come down to four problems: leaves that rot away minutes after the paste, a box cut into the terrain around the build, a build that lands in the wrong place, and a server that stalls on a big paste. This guide shows you how to avoid all four with FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) or WorldEdit.

The short version

Upload the schematic to your schematics folder. Then stand in the world and at the spot where the build should go, and run:

text
/gamerule random_tick_speed 0
//schem load <name>
//paste -n
//paste -a -e -s
//replace ##leaves ^[persistent=true]
//fixlighting
  1. random_tick_speed 0 stops leaves decaying while you work. Before Minecraft 1.21.11 the rule is called randomTickSpeed.
  2. //schem load puts the build in your clipboard.
  3. //paste -n selects the area the build will fill without placing anything, so you can check the position.
  4. //paste -a -e -s pastes the build without its air and with its entities, then selects it.
  5. //replace ##leaves ^[persistent=true] makes every leaf in the build permanent.
  6. //fixlighting clears any dark patches. It's a FAWE command; skip it on plain WorldEdit.

Each step is explained in full on the next pages.

What you need

Requirement Details
A world-editing plugin FastAsyncWorldEdit or WorldEdit, in a build made for your server's Minecraft version. Install one or the other, never both.
Permissions Run the commands as an operator.
The build The schematic from your download, usually a .schem file.
A backup A copy of the world you're pasting into. See Prepare the world.

FAWE or WorldEdit?

Both use the same commands, so this guide works for either. The differences show up on bigger builds:

  • Large pastes. FAWE places blocks in the background, so the server keeps running. WorldEdit places everything at once, which can freeze the server for a while.
  • Block updates. FAWE turns them off by default, so sand stays put and water doesn't flow. WorldEdit leaves them on, so turn them off before pasting (see Using plain WorldEdit).
  • Lighting. FAWE relights after the paste and has //fixlighting for leftover dark patches. WorldEdit lights blocks as it places them and has no fix command.

For anything bigger than a small house, use FAWE.
